The classic beauty of the Summer Palace

The Lubomirski's Summer Palace in Rzeszów is one of the most valuable architectural objects of the city preserved to our times. Located in close proximity to the Lubomirski Castle, over the centuries, it underwent many reconstructions. It did not keep its original architectural form, as well as the baroque gardens. Nevertheless, it is still a testimony to the former splendour of the Lubomirski patronage, then owners of huge latifundium.

There are no archival plans or documents confirming the name of the building's creator. All historical and stylistic analyzes point to the Dutch architect Tylman of Gameren, brought to Rzeszów at the end of the seventeenth century, by Hieronim Augustyn Lubomirski. It means that the object could have been built around 1700. According to the hypothesis drawn up by Julian Nieć, the summer palace was rebuilt probably after 1737, after the marriage of Jerzy Ignacy Lubomirski (50 y.o.) with very young baroness Joanna von Stein zu Jettingen (14 y.o.). Jerzy Ignacy completely rebuilt the building and gardens for his young wife. The reconstruction included only the outer silhouette, the shape of the roofs and the architectural decoration were changed. Busts, cavities and supraports were added. The park assumption has changed. Soon afterwards, the second floor of the building was added to the middle part of the building.

The only preserved iconographic source depicting the residence in its heyday are the Rzeszów Triptych from the first half of XVIII and Plan with a view of Rzeszów à vol d'oiseau, from 1762, made by Captain K. H. Wiedemann. Among the three gardens, there is a two-storey form of the palace, set on a plan similar to the letter H, set on a terrace, with an entrance through a few semi-circularly rounded steps. The most representative part of the garden, maintained in the spirit of jardin à la franÒ«aise, stretched before the facade of the building. Its axis of symmetry marked the course of the main avenue. Five rectangular quarters were symmetrically placed on both sides, decorated with stone vases on the edges. The rows of decoratively trimmed trees stretched along the sides of the garden. The entrance to the garden was preceded by a wall with guardrails, of which only one has survived to this day. On the left side of the palace, there was a garden made of rectangular quarters made of precisely trimmed trees. It was a favourite place for walks, flirtations and romances. The remaining, third part of the garden located at the back of the palace was filled with orchards and vegetable gardens.

At the end of the eighteenth century, the palace and the surrounding garden began to fall into ruin. In 1819, the castle and the remaining part of the gardens with a vineyard, pond and island were sold to the Austrian government. The grounds around the property were dissected. The palace was fenced in again, exposed brick walls and pillars topped with cornice and vases from the former flower garden. At the end of the 19th century new streets were marked out in the city centre. In front of the facade of the palace, parallel to the fence housing the entrance gate, ran an alley bearing the name of Lubomirskis Alley. Perpendicularly, the avenue stretched and today is called Avenue under the Chestnuts, with residential buildings from the early twentieth century. In 1939, the owner established a field hospital in the historic residence. After the renovation carried out in 1981, the palace was adapted to the branch of the Academy of Music in Krakow and the Department of Musical Education of the local Higher School of Pedagogy. In later years, the Institute of Music of the University of Rzeszów was located here.

In September 2013, the Lubomirski Summer Palace was purchased by the Regional Medical Chamber. At the initiative of the new owner, activities aimed at restoring the mansion began. The first scope of work began at the end of January 2014. The works were completed in 2018.
