Location

The building is located in Carlsberg district in Copenhagen.

Carlsberg is an area located straddling the border of Valby and Vesterbro districts in central Copenhagen, Denmark approximately 2.4 km from the City Hall Square. The area emerged when J.C. Jacobsen founded his original brewery in the district in 1847.

The area is dominated by numerous historic and restored 19th- and early 20th-century buildings, many of which have lavish ornamentations, as well as two historic gardens. The buildings have served a wide array of original functions, some of which are not immediately associated with the production of beer. These include a lighthouse, stables, Italianate villas and a museum.

After the decision was made to close the brewery, plans were launched to redevelop the area into a new district. A master plan for the area draws on inspiration from classical, dense city centers with short, winding streets, passageways and small squares. It will also feature ten slim towers. The planned district will aim at sustainability and an active urban life.

The idea of the project

Existing building is part of old Carlsberg factories complex from 1883. As a monument legally protected by the conservator, construction and load bearing elements can't be changed. First original load bearing construction is made of bricks in English Cross bond style of brickwork (load bearing walls and columns). Secondary load bearing steel elements have been added. Floors have different structures on different levels made of bricks, steel or concrete.
Three elevations are original and constitute the architectural heritage of the district. The north elevation is highly damaged and can be changed or redesigned. Carlsberg Byen, where Røde Lagerbygning is located, is to be transformed into a “City within the City with a sophisticated and vibrant mix of habitation, workplaces, shops, commerce, educational, culture and social institutions, railway stations etc.”

After a thorough analysis of the area, existing buildings, social spaces and plans for expansion of the district, we decided that the main objective of the project is to create a public social space. The post-industrial building of Røde Lagerbygning in the Carlsberg district in Copenhagen clearly marks its presence in this part of town and will also expose the historic value of the precinct. The project involves the use of a unique location easily accessible for residents and visitors of the city.

The interior of the building has been designed as open multi-functional spaces, which combine the following functions: Food market & fresh food market, communal cooking spaces and sitting/eating areas, space for courses and workshops, food stands, administration, storage, restrooms, and in the basement storage for food and wine.

The historic and beautifully preserved cellars of the building will be retained, cleaned, primed and renewed.

In the upper basements there will be bowling club consisting of 12 bowling alleys. On the other side of basement will be bar with entertainment zone with board games and table games such as billiard, table football and cards. There will be also club with dancing space. After the renovation works lower basements will hold storages and wine basements, where all eating products and wine will be stored. Part of the basement after the renewal and cleaning will be open to visitors admiring the beauty of the old former factory building. Subsequent floors are designed in such a way to create open multifunctional spaces that allow the building to be adapted to the needs of investors and landlords. The building is well-suited to cultural events and exhibitions, which can be held in the open space.

Ground floor: Shops and market spaces for fresh food are located along the south facade. These are aimed at visitors who want to use the communal kitchens, where together with friends and family they can prepare meals, or as specialty shops for a broader demographic. This communal kitchens can also be used as teaching spaces, where people can for example take cooking and baking courses, display the various cuisines of the world and promote healthy eating. Seating areas, which are located nearby, enable the guests to eat prepared meals and spend time with friends. The open space can be easily adapted to many purposes, eg. exhibitions, concerts and workshops.

Sanitation divisions have been placed next to extended and enlarged staircases and lifts, adapted to the needs of people with disabilities.

1st floor: The floor area has been reduced and opened to allow guests sitting in the first floor to see what is happening in the ground floor. There will be gallery with bridges to open the view through glass facade for visitors and provide people easy access to different parts of the floor (food buying zone, sitting and chilling zone, offices)
The open area will host food stands where visitors who do not wish to cook can buy ready-made and healthy dishes prepared on the spot. Seating spaces scattered around allow people to enjoy the view of the open space of the ground floor. Through the large windows of the north-facing façade the opposite buildings of the Technological Research Centre of Carlsberg and the newly established park can be taken in.

On the first floor there is also an isolated space that can be rented, which is in a glass-enclosed room that can be used for many purposes, such as culinary events or private parties to name a few.

The administrative offices for the building operation are also located on the first floor, and are classified as quiet zone with broad access to natural light through the south facade.

In view of the historical values of the district, as well as the unique new buildings, the second floor loft space has been repurposed. While maintaining the original roof trusses, the space has been divided into a glass enclosed bar area which will also be enriched by sitting zone and  and service space to house the ventilation system. An outdoor viewing terrace with seats and breathtaking views of the newly formed and renewed Carlsberg district with unique historical architectural value will top off the Røde Lagerbygning.
